AY Meda Dhatu

The fourth dhatu is roughly what we call adipose tissue but it also forms cell membranes and lubricates joints.. It is, of course, oily.  It is soft and watery and can store energy for future use.  Meda dhatu has more or less the same qualities as kapha dosha and is considered to be the unprocessed part of mamsa or muscle tissue.

Cholesterol is a lipid from which reproductive hormones are created.  It is therefore necessary for both libido and fertility; and meda dhatu is closely related to love and the ability to give and receive love.

In India, it is believed that typhoid fever will have an adverse effect on meda dhatu as will overconsumption of sweets and alcohol. The main symptom of deficient meda dhatu is dryness.  This, in turn, may lead to creaky joints and degenerative diseases of the bones because the residual of meda dhatu is used to create asthi dhatu which includes the bones and teeth.  An excess of meda dhatu carries a high risk of lipomas. gallstones, and obesity with further complications over time.

To improve the quality of meda dhatu, try using a very quality ghee or cold pressed, organic oil.  To assure good fat metabolism, use gentle spices, especially turmeric, both in culinary and supplements forms.
